What are the main differences in these two products? Does one really need the expensive Photoshop CS2 for basic Web development needs (web photo optimization) and home use? Is Photoshop mostly for professionals who work in the print industry (ie%26gt;Magazines)? What, exactly, can Photoshop offer that PhotoImpact doesn't?

You are correct. Photoshop is a high end software designed for the needs of professional graphic artists, photographers, broadcasters, etc. Many of the masking,cloning and alpha abilities, as well as other features simply cannot be found in other products.

Photoimpact is an excellent software. It's great for consumers and web designers. If you need something basic, with some outstanding features, go for Photoimpact. If you need to be able to manipulate artwork in any way imaginable, then you'll need Photoshop.

Paint shop pro has similar qualities as photoshop though not as versatile ... you can have a look at it.

Photoimpact is good , but I M not so used to it.
Adobe takes the cake.. Its the number one.. you dont need anything else once you have the suite.

I've had Photoshop Elements 5 for about a month now and all was fine up until two days ago. Every time I'd open it, I'd get a pop up and is says ''Your Adobe Photoshop Elements user name, organization, or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit.''

But I put in everything correctly and even re-installed it just to make sure I filled in all the required spots and I registered it online the first night I had bought it. I entered the serial number in correctly and everything. But about an hour later and I try to open it up after rebooting, I get the same error message.

I had adobe photoshop elements 2 but uninstalled it after the error in 5 started showing up thinking it might be the problem but it still doesn't work. Everytime I want to use it I have to reinstall it. Can anyone help?

I have 3 photoshop questions for you pro';s?

The first question I will try to ask clearly, first I have very little experience in photoshop.. I have seen websites that have an image on the top of the page as a banner (the name of the website) and the have what looks like hand written words on the picture ex. home contact us and these handwritten words are the navigation of the website how can I do this take a picture write on it and turn the words into links to other pages

2) how can I create a trace image in photoshop which will act as a template for other pages.. I plan to import into dreamweaver and trace this image to speed up my web design.. again how can I create the trace image itself in photoshop

i have an answer for question 1. making a link of an image, lies in the code for the web page, not the picture. For example, if you have a picture called pic.jpg and want it to work as a link to google, make the code like this:

GIMP compared to Photoshop?

How does GIMP match up to Photoshop? What functions does Photoshop have that GIMP doesn't and/or vice versa? I really only want such a software to make signatures and avatars for forum-based websites. Since photoshop is obscenely expensive, I was thinking of downloading GIMP. Is it safe/legal? If I do download it, will I be able to make signatures/avatars using the same instructions that I might find on a Photoshop tutorial for the same thing? Thank you! ^u^

GIMP is perfectly safe, and entirely suitable for that type of work. The differences in functionality don't really come into play for producing simple graphics like that.

You should be able to adapt most tutorials to use under GIMP, but the interfaces do have differences.

Personally, I find GIMP to be rather easier to use, and I often use it even though I have Photoshop installed.

never heard of gimp so it musn't be as good.. photoshop has more types of brush styles and effects that you could use to get the affect that your are looking for.
GIMP is an open source program under the GNU license, so it's legal to download, decompile, and modify. If your mod is a good one then you must submit it to GNU. GIMP has an add-on program that makes it act more like Photoshop.

BUT, i do not have photoshop. Instead, i ahve GIMPshop. Which is Very Simular to Photoshop as i asked in another question; because i do not have the kind of money to buy it. i believe you're referring to when you have an image on a separate layer above the text layer and you could option-left click in between the two layers to mask the picture out with the text. I haven't gotten my copy of CS3 yet (still on CS2) so i'm hoping that works.

If not you can always rasterize your text on one layer, command-click the layer thumbnail to select it. put your image on a separate layer. with the text selection still loaded, hold down the option key (i believe its equal to the alt key on a PC) and click the icon at the bottom of the layers palette for the layer mask. this will mask out your type in the shape of the text selection (you may have to invert the mask for it to show up correctly)

I'm designing a website on photoshop and I'm not sure where to go from there. Could someone in detail show me step by step what I do to get my photoshop images to html format and then using FireFTP upload them onto my existing server?

after ur done with the design u have to slice it and save it as a template, remember u just did the design u have to program now the site using dreamweaver or any realated program to html. and then u upload it to ur webserver. i hope that help u.
