Free photoshop, or photoshop-like software?

I need a photoshop (or something like it) to make an cool avatar pic for imvu. I dont know where to start. I've heard about GIMP, and when I went to their website, i got really confused. I need help! If GIMP works for you could you please explain it to me, or if you have a different photoshop(type thingy,lol) suggestion please do tell. Thanks bunches!!

I have a photo on there that looks like what I will be doing, because me friend (http://avatars.imvu.com/serineserineseri... made it for me. I'm sure on her page there are some clear examples also.
